It has been a busy year indeed and I have been incredibly grateful to have some of my work recognized by various film festivals and competitions. The "Empty" Screenplay is still working its way around Screenwriting Competitions and recently won Best Screenplay for Just4Shorts Hollywood and was an Official Selection for Los Angeles Cinefest.
We started the year off strong with another win for the short screenplay "Empty." The New York Film Awards awarded Empty with Best Screenplay. We are thrilled and in pre-production.
We were thrilled to discover this month that our latest short screenplay Empty has won Best Drama Screenplay at the Los Angeles Film Awards. This is an incredible, gritty, powerful and moving script that we look forward to sharing with you.
At the moment we have three productions in the works. Abbey is a feature film written by Katherine Hill. It is currently being submitted to Fellowship competitions as this will be my first major Feature film that I will be directing. It is a passion project that I have been working on for the past three years. It actually began as I was completing my Masters in Film. Writing was a component of my M.A and I chose to work on a treatment for this semi-autobiographical feature-length screenplay. Creating narrative films that touch on social injustices have often been a passion of mine and through this film, as well as other short films I have created, I hope to make an impact.
I have always been fascinated by films that provoke such emotion in a way that you continue thinking about them and ruminating over them for days to come. It is the films that we discuss over dinner right after we have seen them, debate over the characters decisions, what happens to them and where they would go next, that inspire me as a filmmaker. Making movies is not just about money or entertainment (both of which are still important) but about finding a way to shed light on an issue, create a movement for change, find compassion and understanding. I have had the pleasure of speaking with a lawyer about some of the current challenges the legal system faces in Vancouver, BC with regards to domestic abuse and sexual exploitation. It is my intention, with these next few projects to continue working within the system to create change in order to better protect children and families. We need to come together as a community, as a society and without greater understanding there cannot be great change.
Feature film Abbey will tackle a very human, often comedic and dramatic story of a single Mom fleeing abuse and trying to get on with life.
Short film Empty is currently in pre-production as we seek funds to shoot Spring 2018. It is a film that tackles sexual exploitation, prostitution of both men and women,
(teen girls in particular) and how two strangers can come together in the midst of great pain and be there for one another.
I am also in a research phase working on a documentary to help families who are dealing with domestic abuse and the system that is currently in place.
Follow along as we share our journey to film in a way that entertains, takes risks and creates change.
